After breakfast this morning, we’ll head to Kanchanaburi, 130km west of Bangkok in the valley of the Mae Klong River for some serious history: a visit to the infamous Bridge on the River Kwai. During the Japanese occupation of Thailand (Siam, back then) in World War II allied prisoners-of-war were enslaved to build the infamous “Death Railway” along the Khwae Noi River. (A story popularized by the movie “The Bridge over the River Kwai”). It is estimated that 16,000 prisoners of war and over 50,000 impressed laborers died during the building of the railroad. We will visit the Jeath War Museum which narrates the construction of the “Death Railway”, and the Cemetery for the Allied POWs who died whilst building the railway. We’ll then board a boat for a river trip to one of the nearby villages. At the end of the tour we’ll return to Bangkok.

The last part of the way will be by speed boat, from which we’ll be able to view the lifestyle of the residents living on the sides of the canals.
From there we will continue towards the valley of the Mahel Klong and board long tail boats to learn the secrets of growing river fish and marsh shells.
We will start by sailing into the marshes and the oyster farms will see the unique methods of growing oysters in this area as well as the arduous work of local residents. We will continue on our way to the mangrove forests that grow in the marshes and watch the dozens of monkeys that live in the reserve. From there we will continue on our long tail boats to one of the bamboo towers scattered throughout the reserve and climb one of them to view the oyster growing spaces. We’ll continue by boat to visit the fishing villages from where we set sail. And no tour of any country is complete without at least some shopping… So, we’ll conclude the tour at Thailand’s largest shopping mall – MBK – for a memorable shopping experience. At the end of the visit we will return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
