Arraba Crest Hike
We take the lift to the top, for a one-way hike from Porta Vescovo, overlooking Marmolada Glacier, to Passo Pordoi, where the bus picks us up.
Misurina is Auronzo di Cadore town’s highest hamlet, called ‘the Pearl of the Dolomites’. The 1756 metre above sea level lake reflects the south east slopes of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the Cadini, Sorapiss and Cristallo massifs, and is in the heart of the UNESCO Dolomite Heritage area.
The Tre Cime di Lavaredo are the symbol of the Dolomite UNESCO World Heritage Site. Auronzo is the only town from which the south faces of the Tre Cime are visible. From Misurina you can see their south-west faces which conceal the Cima Piccola peak. We’ll see Cima Piccola (2857 m), Cima Grande (2999 m) and Cima Ovest (2973 m) in all their glory. From Rifugio Lavaredo (2344 m), on the other hand, you can observe the sharp faces of Mt. Spigolo Giallo. Some of the most beautiful Dolomite mountains are visible around the Tre Cime and from the convenient vantage point of Rifugio Auronzo. The Cadini massif and Mt. Paterno, the Cristallo, Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo, Dolomiti di Sesto, Croda dei Toni, Marmarole, Antelao and Sorapiss massifs and Lake Misurina and Auronzo’s Lake are also there.
The Somadida Controlled Nature Reserve in Palùs San Marco mid-way between Auronzo and Misurina, is the largest forest in the Cadore area and one of the most beautiful in the Dolomites. Protected even in the fifteenth century by the Venetian Republic which took over control of it for its galley oars and ship flagpoles, it is now one of 130 protected places owned by the State. Surrounded by the majestic peaks of Mt. Cristallo and Mt. Sorapiss and the wild summits of the Marmarole massif, it contains a nature and fauna heritage worth seeing. Norway spruce, silver fir, larch and beech trees, wild berries, deer, roe deer – these are just some of the fauna and flora to be found in the reserve.
